How Compressed-Air Laser Cutting Works

May 13, 2009

In compressed-air laser cutting, plasma is produced as bi-product. This is very similar to CNC plasma cutting when electricity creates the plasma. Laser power is reinforced in a very tight focal point, and the compressed-air makes a plasma ripple on the surface of material to be cut. Read more about – How Compressed-Air Laser Cutting Works.

Laser Cutting Technology Brief in Laser Cutting Service

April 21, 2009

Laser Cutting

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation these words make up LASER. Laser is the technology behind laser cutting for hard material, especially metals for production line or any industrial manufacturing. The laser devices penetrate through hard materials like carbon steel, aluminium, stainless steel and copper alloys with highly concentrated monochromatic and tenacious ray of light through stimulated emission. Such hard materials act differently when the laser beam is directed. Materials either melt, burn or blow away by gas emission and leaves behind an edge of high level surface finish.

High-tech industrial laser cutters are essential for flat metal sheets or any structural or piping materials. Many metal fabrication industries use laser cutting technique to speed up its metal cutting capacity. Among other benefits of laser cutting technique are: reducing production costs, accelerating productivity, and providing high quality cutting service.

Various Types of Lasers

CO2 laser, neodymium (Nd) laser, and neodymium yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd-YAG) lasers are the 3 types of lasers available.

Drilling, cutting, and engraving are the general use for the CO2 laser. The very common variants of CO2 lasers are fast and slow axial flow, transverse flow, and slab.

Style-wise, Neodymium (Nd) and Neodymium Yttrium-Aluminium-Garnet (Nd-YAG) lasers may seem identical, but application-wise, they differ widely. For boring metals very high energy is required with low repetitions and Neodymium (Nd) Laser is used for this purpose.

Boring and engraving are the major utility of Neodymium Yttrium-Aluminium-Garnet (Nd-YAG) Lasers, which also require very high power. But all 3 lasers can be used for welding purposes.

Laser Cutting Methods

There are various ways to cut materials u laser. However, different methods should be used to cut different materials. Such as:

  • Melting, blowing and burning
  • Melting and blowing
  • Vaporization
  • Scribing
  • Thermal stress cracking
  • Cold cutting
  • Burning stabilized laser cutting.

Laser Cutting – Advantages & Disadvantages

Precision, economy, cutting quality, and speed are primary advantages of laser cutting. But, very high voltage is the main barrier. Moreover, highly intensified laser beam is also risky in operations.
